Essential oils for soothing joint pain

Relieve Aching Joints With Essential Oils

Joint pain is often accompanied by swelling, tenderness and inflammation in the affected area, especially when it comes to arthritic joint pain. Thankfully, a combination of certain essential oils can actually reduce the severity of these symptoms and act as a natural pain reliever.

While there are over 60 different essential oils that are known to have pain-relieving properties, peppermint and wintergreen essential oils, in particular, are known for their analgesic action, which helps reduce pain and swelling of the joints. These oils are also known for their anti-rheumatic and anti-inflammatory properties, which makes them among the best essential oils used to deal with aching joints. In fact, it has been found that almost 95% of wintergreen essential oil is a component that is also present in aspirin.

Apart from these, certain other oils including eucalyptus oil, rosemary oil, cinnamon oil and juniper berry oil have also been used to deal with joint pain. Using these oils is actually quite simple- in the appropriate concentration (which is safe for use topically), it they can be gently massaged on the affected area, several times a day. Many a times, these oils are also warmed up before application to stimulate healing of the tissues and calm down inflammation.

For pain that is not localized, you can also consider adding a few drops of any of these oils to your bath water.

Arthritis And Stiff Joints

Essential oils for arthritis

Pain, swelling and stiffness of the joints are common symptoms associated with arthritis, and living with them can be a tough job.

While arthritis can be managed with certain drugs and medications, using essential oils can prove to be of good help too.

Peppermint oil, marjoram oil, rosemary oil and lavender and eucalyptus oils are best known for their ability to deal with the symptoms associated with arthritis. Most of these oils possess powerful anti-inflammatory properties which reduce redness and pain of the affected areas. When applied topically, these oils have the power to relieve the stiffness of joints and promote healthy movements.

Several studies have also revealed that the use of these essential oils could actually inhibit the production of certain compounds in the body that are linked to increased inflammation of the joints.

Some other oils have also been found to be effective in dealing with arthritis:

  • Frankincense
  • Lemon
  • Cedarwood
  • Tea tree
  • Bay leaf
  • Myrrh

A blend of these oils can be applied topically (in the diluted form) to the affected area, which then gets absorbed into the bloodstream and causes almost immediate relief. Almond oil is a good choice for blending with these oils to make a wonderful massage oil to help your body absorb the benefits of essential oils quickly. It also leaves your skin silky smooth and conditioned. You could also choose to use these oils in a diffuser.
